How to prepare for CAT DILR

Practice CAT Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning with set selection, clear diagrams, a four-week routine and an original arrangement example.

For candidates who can follow a DILR solution but struggle to start a set on their own. The practice routine does not assume a fixed future CAT pattern.

Your study plan

Use this suggested routine as a starting point. Adjust the pace to your diagnostic results and available time.

  1. Week 1

Solve one set per study day without time pressure.

Checkpoint: Clear tables and correctly recorded constraints.

  2. Week 2

Repeat missed sets and add a different structure.

Checkpoint: A log of reusable deductions.

  3. Week 3

Compare two sets before you choose one to solve.

Checkpoint: A reason for each selection decision.

  4. Week 4

Use mixed timed practice and review skipped sets.

Checkpoint: An attempt strategy based on your own results.

Translate the set before you solve it

List the entities, variables and restrictions. Choose a table, ordered list, diagram or case split that makes the restrictions visible.

  • For data tables, check units and whether a percentage uses the row, column or total as its base.
  • For arrangements, place the strongest restriction first.
  • Write deductions separately from assumptions so you can undo a failed case.

Practice choosing and leaving a set

Set selection needs practice alongside solving. Compare sets by the clarity of their starting information, not only their length or familiar topic label.

  • Read the questions before you build a large diagram.
  • If repeated work produces no new deduction, mark the state and try another set.
  • After practice, solve a skipped set untimed to learn whether the problem was difficulty, representation or selection.

Review the first missed deduction

Do not just watch the solution. Find the earliest step you could have made from the supplied information, then solve the set again without help.

  • Keep a short record: set type, first deduction, wrong assumption and time spent.
  • Mix tables, arrangements, grouping and other set structures.
  • Use the official CAT site for current instructions and mock availability.

Try a small arrangement

A, B and C present on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, one each day. A is before B. C is not on Monday. Who presents on Monday?

Show the worked example
  • C cannot take Monday.
  • B cannot take Monday because A must be earlier.
  • Therefore A takes Monday. B and C can fill the remaining days in either order. The information does not determine Tuesday.

Review checklist

  • I recorded every restriction.
  • I separated assumptions from deductions.
  • I checked units and percentage bases.
  • I reviewed why I selected or skipped the set.

Common questions

How many DILR sets should I solve each day?

Start with a number you can solve and review fully. One carefully reviewed set is a useful starting point. Increase volume when you can explain your deductions without a solution.
